MARTIN WHEELER

MARTIN WHEELER, baritone, began serious training as a singer in 1988, studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and as well as coaching from David Harper, Benjamin Zander and Stephen Varcoe, in 1998 he sang the role of Leporello in a televised master-class of Mozart’s Don Giovanni with Sir Thomas Allen. His many solo performances include Vivaldi’s Beatus Vir and operatic arias, with Catherine Bott; Handel’s Dixit Dominus, Eternal Source of Light Divine, Pelham Humphrey’s O Lord My God, and Purcell’s Hail, Bright Cecilia!, all with James Bowman; the role of Bajazet in Vivaldi’s opera Tamerlano; Mozart’s C minor Mass with the Newcastle Choral Society; Fauré’s Requiem; Handel’s Messiah, Dettingen Te Deum, Manoah and Harapha in Handel’s Samson; the Magnificat of both J. S. and C. P. E. Bach, Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on Christmas Carols, Dvorak’s Te Deum and Stainer’s Crucifixion.

Martin is an experienced recitalist, and especially enjoys singing lieder (particularly Schubert) and English song.
